The Lovely Little Black Dress

Have you ever wondered how the term “Little Black Dress” (LBD) came to be? We found the answer. Read on!

Like all fabulous fashion ideas, the inspiration for the LBD came from Coco Chanel in the 1920s. The LBD is intended to be versatile, long-lasting, and timeless.

LBDs are versatile; they should be a simple cut that can be dressed up or down. Wear an LBD with pumps and a jacket and you have a perfect business outfit. Add some ornate jewelry and accessories and you have a perfect dress for a wedding or a ball.

LBDs are long-lasting and timeless; they should not be a part of any obvious fashion trends. LBDs should be able to hang in your closet for years, pulled out time after time for the routine or extravagant events in your life. LBDs should be of a simple cut that avoids any semblance of fashion trends.

For all of these reasons, Coco felt that the LBD was an essential piece to round out a complete wardrobe. Like most of Coco’s ideas, her suggestion regarding LBDs is a rule-of-thumb today. Today, most fashion observers and industry leaders consider it a rule of fashion that every woman should own a LBD that can be dressed up or down.

Here at Emmy Mae Boutique, we’ve always loved LBDs! We love the simple elegance and the versatility that these types of dresses provide. That’s why I was so excited when we were able to get THREE lovely LBDs in the boutique: The AudreyThe Stella, and the Kaylee. I absolutely love all of these dresses. While they’re all three considered a LBD, they are full of unique details that make them stand apart. Today, I wanted to compare the three to help you choose which one to add to your wardrobe!

The Audrey:

The most obvious feature of the Audrey is the scalloped neckline – elegant but timeless. We love the sleeves and the fit-and-flair body. The Audrey has a great amount of swing to it (perfect for dancing), and it has a generous amount of stretch. The rayon-nylon-spandex blend is SO COMFY; you’ll be comfortable in this dress all night long. Dress the Audrey up with a bold statement necklace and earrings, or keep it casual with a blazer and wedges. This dress is honestly perfect.

The Stella:

The Stella instantly catches your attention with that darling lace overlay. It’s so feminine, but it maintains the essential timeless quality required of LBDs. The Stella is very versatile; it can be worn strapless or with the spaghetti straps. A small adhesive line included along the edge of the bust will help it stay in place if you choose to go strapless. The silky underlayer is so light that you’ll be comfortable in it for hours. Wearing the dress makes you feel extra feminine because of the fit and the lace.

The Kaylee:

The Kaylee is made for comfort! The stretch-enhanced jersey knit is loose and flowy. Loaded with features, this darling piece is perfect for casual occasions when you want to look a little fancy! The ruffled sleeve will make you feel dainty and the longer sleeves are a must-have for the cooler season. So amazingly comfy, but still so stunning.

We LOVE the Audrey, the Stella, and the Kaylee. It's REALLY hard to choose between the three. If I had to pick one, I would recommend the Audrey or the Kaylee for more everyday wear and the Stella for special occasions. In reality, though, all three dresses are well-suited for any occasion: just like any LBD should be!
